OpenAI has unveiled its latest text-to-image creation, DALL-E 3. The new system is designed to translate nuanced text prompts into highly detailed corresponding images.
DALL-E 3 represents a major upgrade in precision from previous versions like DALL-E 2. Even when given the same text prompt, DALL-E 3 can generate noticeably more accurate images that adhere closely to the description.
This allows users to turn ideas expressed in text into images that match their mental picture more closely. DALL-E 3 has improved comprehension of concepts like textures, proportions, and relationships described in sentences or paragraphs.
OpenAI states that past text-to-image systems often partially ignored the text prompts, requiring users to learn specialized techniques. DALL-E 3 reduces the need for this “prompt engineering” through its enhanced language understanding.
Built natively on top of ChatGPT, DALL-E 3 can collaborate with the conversational AI to refine descriptions to get the desired results. Users can ask ChatGPT to suggest text prompts then see them vividly translated by DALL-E 3.
DALL-E 3 will first become available to ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise customers in October through OpenAI’s API and app. Later access will be provided directly within ChatGPT to all Plus and Enterprise users.
OpenAI says it has implemented several measures to limit harmful content generation, including protections related to public figures and allowing artists to opt out of training. But balancing creativity and safety remains an ongoing challenge.
