Perplexity began with the Ask answer engine in December 2022. It later expanded into Copilot and Pro Search, enterprise workspaces, Sonar models and APIs, Deep Research, Comet, and Computer.
Products also changed names and moved into larger platforms as Perplexity shifted from answering questions to completing longer tasks.
This timeline tracks the launches, model and API releases, major rollouts, renames, and retirements that defined those product lines.

How Perplexity’s Products Changed Over Time
From Ask and Copilot to Deep Research and Computer
Ask established Perplexity’s cited-answer experience in 2022. Copilot added guided research in 2023, using follow-up questions to refine a query before running deeper searches. The research experience later continued through Pro Search as Perplexity expanded multi-step search and reasoning.
Deep Research moved further into autonomous investigation in 2025. It could search across many sources and produce a sourced report from a complex question. Computer extended that work in 2026 through agents, code execution, connected services, files, and longer-running tasks.
From Labs to Create Files and Apps
Labs launched in May 2025 as a creation mode for reports, spreadsheets, dashboards, and web apps. Perplexity renamed it Create files and apps in February 2026 as the product menu was reorganized.
Computer launched later that month as a distinct product centered on agent orchestration and long-running tasks. Deep Research later became available inside Computer, where research could continue into files and other finished work.
Sonar and the Developer Platform
Perplexity’s developer platform began with pplx-api and hosted models in 2023. PPLX Online introduced Perplexity-tuned models with web access later that year.
Sonar became Perplexity’s search-focused model family in 2025. Search API provided ranked web results apart from generated answers, and the embedding models introduced a retrieval-focused model line in 2026.
Agent API launched in March 2026 as a managed runtime for models, search, tools, and multi-step agent tasks. It expanded in August and gained reusable agent configurations in September. The September Sonar retirement applied to the older Chat Completions path as Perplexity shifted developer workloads toward Agent API.
From Spaces to Projects
Spaces launched in 2024 as workspaces for organizing research and internal knowledge. Projects replaced the Spaces name in July 2026 and moved the concept into a workspace built around Computer tasks, shared files, connected apps, and persistent memory.
Existing Spaces moved into Projects rather than continuing as a second workspace product.
Computer on Local Devices
Computer first launched as a cloud product on the web. Personal Computer extended its agent capabilities to local files and desktop apps on Mac and Windows.
Portable Computer moved Computer’s models and agent stack onto supported local hardware. Hybrid Compute on Mac introduced another execution model in which cloud and local models can handle different parts of one Computer task.
